I have been an avid fan of the horse racing industry since an early age and I also like watching old British movies so I find a combination of the two fascinating, especially when they feature close-up views of racecourses past and present.
I can remember watching the racing on a Saturday afternoon in the early 1980s with my dad and placing a few small bets on the action, often winning more than losing. My dad went onto work at numerous racecourses across the south (still works at Fontwell and Goodwood) and my mum also owns her own horses so I used to get a chance to have the occasional ride - she now too works at Goodwood racecourse.
I can also remember my maternal grandparents both being keen on old British movies and it was around their house that I first discovered the George Formby film "Come on George" among their collection - a movie which had me transfixed to the screen due to the comedy acting and racecourse action.
It is only recently that I started researching other British horse racing movies and I wanted to create a catalogue and review of the gems I had unearthed so far - that's how this website came about. I'm hoping that this site will appeal to similar minded people and that together we can discover even more British racing movies.
Living just outside Chichester I have got Goodwood and Fontwell Park racecourses on my doorstep which allows me to enjoy both racing codes all year round. I mostly enjoy racing on a quiet midweek day when there aren't so many punters around and you can get up close to the jockeys, horses and action.
The picture on the home and link pages is the start of the 2001 Stewards Cup at Goodwood which I commissioned a friend to take for me (Trevor Hare) - the race was won by Guinea Hunter ridden by Jamie Spencer and trained by Tim Easterby (left centre of picture green with white diamonds). The picture on the left is one of me taken at Goodwood in 2011.
